I have a 39A with serial number 73123111 on the tang behind the hammer. The barrel is marked "The Marlin Firearms Co. North Haven. Conn. U.S.A. CAL. 22 S. L. & L.R. MICRO-GROOVE BARREL ORIGINAL GOLDEN-39A. It has the JM proof mark on the left side of the barrel just in front of the receiver. This is a very nice early production Marlin Model 39A Mountie lever-action .22 rifle made in 1956 ("N" date code). This rifle is the predecessor to the "Golden 39A Mountie", and is not marked "Mountie" on the barrel nor does it have a factory gold finished trigger. It does feature a factory gloss blue finish, a straight-gripped American Walnut ...But the 39 was in priduction from 1921 to 1938. Initially serial numbers had no prefix. Then the “S” prefix followed. After that came the HS prefix. so your is in the latter part. If original, your front sight might help narrow it down but there are ni records by year matching up serial numbers. According to a sheet, that gives production numbers made each year, for each Model 39A made from 1952 to 1975. According to your gun, someone miscounted. Or one of the other special runs, used the same serial numbers. Even though I could swear they were kept separate.Prices for new and used 39A's were running $475+ so I felt this was a good deal. However, the fact that this rifle was built in 1947 (as indicated by the prefix letter D in the serial number), it did not have a hammer-block safety, and it came with a tang peep sight made this an outstanding deal in my estimation!…
