He's been at this for a while. He's human and famous (relatively speaking). It's inevitable that he's made enemies/detractors along the way. He may have let emotion get the better of him, said things he didn't mean, or made some other errors in judgment. Everyone does, it's just magnified when you're under the microscope of celebrity.
