I have been practicing speedrunning a lot recently, and the rapier is always the weapon of choice. This makes sense for a lot of reasons; It has one of the fastest attack speeds in the game. Uchigatana or Black knights halberd are very good weapons for a mage when you infuse them to the magic part you want. The Uchigatana is very light and has low requirements, buffed you can defend yourself in melee pretty well without having to put many points in dex/strength.

The regular "Great Sword" is good for mob clearing since it swipes horizontally when one handed. Two handed will swipe vertically which may be useful against certain enemies.
